Commercial Licenses for eValid No Longer Supported

Effective 31 July 2022 eValid Commercial Licenses will no longer be supported.

eValid Commercial Licenses provide for a "pay-as-you-go" capability to run eValid playbacks -- typically for website monitoring purposes -- independent of the location or setup of the machine executing the test.

Playback executions are charged on a per-test basis.

As flexible and convenient as this is, to accomplish the authentication required additional web traffic and eValid server activity to provide immediate verification of the license.

Effectively, this process used was generating, in real-time, an on-demand one-off authorization for each eValid playback.

This produced additional web traffic that has been deemed undesirable.

For our customers, existing eValid Commercial License(s) will be converted an appropriate standard eValid license(s) at no charge.

Regular eValid licenses authentications are done internally to the playback machine and do not involve any web traffic for authentication.

Former SR Board Member Dr. Robert E. Larson

With sadness we note the passing of Dr. Robert E. Larson, a former member of the Board of Directors of Software Research (SR), on 10 March 2022.

Dr. Larson was CEO of Systems Control, Inc., Palo Alto, CA. He was involved with the IEEE in the analysis of the failure of the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor.

He invited Dr. Miller, SR's CEO, to speak about software verification and validation technology at the IEEE/NRC Working Conference on Advanced Electrotechnology Applications to Nuclear Power Plants, Washington, DC, January 1980.

Dr. Larson was invited to be a member of the Board of Directors of SR in April 1997. He served on the Board from 1997 through 2002.

Dr. Larson was a highly respected technologist and he made significant contributions to SR.

In particular, he helped steer its product software development effort focus toward automated web testing, an effort that led eventually to the creation of the successful eValid product.

SR Communications Digitized

As part of our continuing historic digitization project, we have completed scanning hard-copy versions of SR's original Testing Techniques Newsletter dating from 1978.

A summary of this material is found here:

SR/TestWorks/QualityWeek/eValid -- Outgoing Communication Summary

The material here includes digitization of all TTN, QTN, and QMM issues.

After January 1994 all of the SR communications were 100% online.

Historic Interest: SEAT Index Digitized

Beginning in the 1970's staff members at Software Research, Inc., collected material on commercially available software tools.

This was done at first for research purposes, but soon the need for wider dispersal of this kind of information was noted in the industry.

The SEAT Index that resulted from the research resulted in a report that was sold to the general public:

SR SEAT Index 628 Pages September 1982

This is the 6th revision of the document. The ongoing research project ran for nearly three years, and the hard-copy material filled an entire 5-drawer file cabinet.

That material was discarded long ago, and a sole copy of the printed SEAT Index was the basis for the archival scan above.

In parallel, an NBS effort lead by Mr. Raymond C. Houghton, accumulated [primarily for US Government use] this report: NBS Special Publication 500-88, Software Development Tools.

In addition, there were accumulations of software tool descriptions and documentation by TRW Systems (a government contractor) and by D. J. Reifer Associates (a private consultancy), among others.

Given that nearly four decades of have transpired since the SEAT Index was first created, it is interesting to compare the "automated tools" situation then with today.

SR Digitization

As part of our continuing effort to digitize all SR/TestWorks/eValid/QualityWeek and QualityWeek Europe material, we have recently completed finding and scanning all of the old Testing Techniques Newsletter (TTN)...

TTN Consolidated Issue (1977-1994) [281 pages, 186 MB]

Software Quality researchers and practitioners may be interested in the material because it captures very early SR activities in the software quality area -- when the state of technology was very young and rather immature.

Note that the Winter 1987/1988 issue advertised the very first Quality Week Conference (May 1988, San Francisco), after which the field of "Software Testing and Quality Assurance" became rather more organized.

QW/QWE Digitization

Software Quality researchers and practitioners may be interested to know that we have recently completed putting all the material from the early and late QualityWeek/QualityWeek Europe conferences online.   Previously only the last four years of events (1999-2002) were available online.

Here is the link:

QW/QWE Consolidated Conference Material Inventory

As you may note there are still "some missing pieces" but we believe the material is 99% complete.   That page will point to updates and other parts as they are completed.

Note: The material pointed to in this inventory total some ~8.7 GB of data in ~130+ individual files, mostly PDFs, all of which are fully searchable documents.
